How Does Night Vision Equipment Work?
Night vision equipment has been available for over 40 years and was originally developed for military use. During wartime troops needed a way to conduct missions at night when cover was greater, and also needed a way to spot enemy positions in the dark. The military developed night vision equipment to help solve these problems and it allowed personnel using it to see people and objects in complete darkness.
Night vision equipment works in two different ways depending on the type of unit being used. The science behind this technology is based on either light amplification, or thermal imaging. Both of these techniques have matured to the point that they can provide a very good image of a target at a distance under very dark conditions.
The first method that night vision equipment uses is based on light amplification and this type of technology will electronically multiply any available light that occurs naturally in an area. This light is either too dim for us to detect, or it exists in the infrared band, which is below the visible spectrum of frequencies that our eyes are able to see. Even though an area may seem completely dark to the naked eye, there are usually still small amounts of light from stars and the moon that can be amplified by night vision equipment and used to detect people or objects in the area. This type of night vision equipment does this by converting the photons that the dim light produces into electrons that are then amplified by the night vision equipment before being converted back to photons and displayed on a phosphorus screen. The images produced are shades of green that most people associate with night vision equipment. The reason for the color is that our eyes can more easily discern between shades of green than any other phosphorus color.
The other way that night vision equipment works is through the use of thermal imaging. Night vision equipment that uses thermal imaging is more sophisticated and can actually sense the minute temperature differences of various objects. Living things and some inanimate objects give off heat and night vision equipment that is equipped with thermal imaging will create a picture (thermogram) of these temperature differences and display it on a screen. This type of night vision equipment will work in complete darkness and can give you a very clear view of an object and its surroundings.
Both of these styles of night vision equipment are in use today for commercial and military applications. There have been dramatic improvements to both technologies over the years and the night vision equipment available today will give you a clearer image, in darker conditions, at a greater distance than ever before. This night vision equipment includes all types of optical varieties and is found today in binoculars, monocular devices, night vision goggles and night vision lenses for cameras. Night vision equipment prices have also come down considerably over the years and today this type of equipment can be found in a wide variety of price ranges that anyone can afford.
